Geomorphometry and DEM Error
نویسنده
چکیده
Studies of DEM error have consistently found a link between terrain characteristics such as slope shape or steepness and error. This link is explored by looking at error in relation to various geomorphometric measures for a study area in Scotland. The magnitude of error is found to vary systematically between convex, planar and convex areas and measures of terrain roughness show some degree of correlation with error. These results suggest that it may be possible to produce better models of DEM error which are based on the nature of the terrain instead of the usual assumption that DEM error has the same characteristics across the DEM.

Geomorphometry – diversity in quantitative surface analysis
A widening variety of applications is diversifying geomorphometry (digital terrain modelling), the quantitative study of topography. An amalgam of earth science, mathematics, engineering and computer science, the discipline has been revolutionized by the computer manipulation of gridded terrain heights, or digital elevation models (DEMs). Its rapid expansion continues. This article reviews the ...
متن کاملLand surface derivatives: history, calculation and further development
The use of derivatives in geomorphometry is reviewed. For first and second derivatives (slope and curvatures) of the land surface, represented by a square-grid DEM, use of a quadratic based on nine points is recommended. For detailed analysis of slope gradient, maximum slope (based on two points) may be useful: but only if the DEM is very accurate. For curvature, streamline (rotor) curvature sh...
متن کاملEigenvector Analysis of Digital Elevation Models in a GIS: Geomorphometry and Quality Control
Digital elevation models (DEMs) cover a wide range of scales, and allow statisticalanalysis of geomorphometric parameters. At global or continental scale, DEMs covering rectangular quadrangles can be considered random samples. Average quadrangle values can be compared at different DEM scales, and for different physiographic provinces. Three independent variables provide valuable descriptions of...
متن کاملFuzzy delineation of drainage basins through probabilistic interpretation of diverging flow algorithms
The assessment of uncertainty is a major challenge in geomorphometry. Methods to quantify uncertainty in digital elevation models (DEM) are needed to assess and report derivatives such as drainage basins. While Monte-Carlo (MC) techniques have been developed and employed to assess the variability of second-order derivatives of DEMs, their application requires explicit error modelling and numero...
متن کاملGeomorphometry: A Brief Guide
Geomorphometry is the science of quantitative land-surface analysis (Pike, 1995, 2000a; Rasemann et al., 2004). It is a modern, analytical-cartographic approach to representing bare-earth topography by the computer manipulation of terrain height (Tobler, 1976, 2000). Geomorphometry is an interdisciplinary field that has evolved from mathematics, the Earth sciences, and — most recently — compute...
